What Flat Roof Puddles Say About Drainage

A puddle on a low-slope roof can have more than one cause. Debris at a drain, a blocked scupper or a low area in the roof can hold water in different ways. The repair has to match the reason it remains.

Greenwood Roofing Co helps building owners separate drainage work from membrane repairs and coating decisions. A free roof inspection is a useful next step when water is entering or a persistent low area needs evaluation.

An Outlet Problem and a Low Spot Need Different Work

A blocked drain interrupts an existing water path. Clearing the obstruction can restore that path, but the drain connection and adjacent membrane still need to be sound. A scupper through a parapet also relies on intact flashing and an open discharge.

A low spot created by roof shape or structural movement is a different problem. Coating follows that shape. It does not raise the low point or change the underlying slope. The source of the elevation difference needs evaluation before a surface treatment is chosen.

Standing Water Can Expose a Weak Detail

Water held against a seam, penetration or edge connection has more opportunity to find an opening. The visible puddle and the actual leak source are related clues, but neither establishes the moisture condition below the membrane.

Once water enters insulation or supporting layers, a surface patch does not remove it. The repair plan needs to address the affected assembly and restore a compatible connection to sound material.

Use the Findings to Choose Repair or Replacement

A contained membrane or drain detail can accept a compatible repair where surrounding material remains sound. Widespread wet insulation, unstable support or failing attachment can require a larger removal and replacement plan.

Restoration belongs on a suitable dry and well-adhered roof. A coating can protect an eligible surface after preparation and repairs; it does not substitute for drainage correction or structural work.

Discuss a Flat Roof Drainage Concern

Call (816) 744-1346 or request an inspection for the building. Mention where water is appearing inside and any known rooftop equipment.
